With the 10th anniversary of her mother’s death approaching, Amy Sills Eggers figured she could “sit around and be sad about it,” or she could do something. She came up with a project that would not only honor the memory of her mother, Jane Sills, but also help families of students at Lake Ridge Middle School in Woodbridge, where Sills taught language arts for more than a decade.

Eggers, 41, of Clifton, is working with administrators at Lake Ridge to set up Jane’s Food Closet, which will provide food and other household items to students whose families need assistance.

Walk to School Day

As Wednesday dawned, bright and sunny, it was a perfect fall day to walk to school. And that’s exactly what hundreds of Prince William County children did — joined by some special escorts.

Students from about 30 schools across the county participated in International Walk to School Day as part of an effort to promote physical fitness and safe routes to school.

Virtual high school

At the beginning of the summer, Christine Ocalan, a senior at Forest Park High School in Woodbridge, needed just two classes to graduate. Not wanting to spend her summer sitting in school, she enrolled in Prince William County schools’ Virtual High School and took her English and government classes online. She graduated last week.

Ocalan was one of a record 955 students who enrolled in Virtual High School this summer. Through the program, students can follow a flexible daily schedule to complete their coursework online.
